An Uneasy Alliance

Earlier this week, I relinquished the deck to a family of birds who were not thrilled by my presence. The weather has been gorgeous — sunny and breezy, just perfect for making use of the laptop to write outdoors. One afternoon is not so bad, but I couldn’t see shutting myself up indoors — birds or no birds. There had to be a compromise.
Our deck is rather tiny, but I moved the bistro set over three feet. That makes for an awkward seating arrangement behind the door, but I can live with it and the birds would have to meet me halfway.
The bird parents are clearly unhappy that I am here. Tiny as they are, there is a great deal of loud chatter and a wild fluttering of wings. But they are flying in with their offerings to the little one — one doing the feeding white the other stands guard. I swear we’ve even made eye contact.
It is an uneasy alliance, but we’re all managing to do what we have to do. If only it were that simple with people.
